Position

  • Superficial

Origin

  • Lateral epicondyle of humerus

Insertion

  • Lateral aspect of olecranon
  • Proximale 1/4 of posterior ulna

Main function

  • Elbow
    • Extension

Nerve innervation

  • Segmental
    • C7-C8
  • Peripheral
    • Nervus radialis

Arterial blood supply

  • Deep brachial artery

Palpation

  • Patient position: Sitting
  • Place a finger on the olecranon while you add another finger to the lateral epicondyle
  • Then place a finger from the opposite hand halfway between these two fingers and move the finger about 1cm distally
  • Give resistance in the direction of flexion of the elbow so that the patient is giving force in the direction of extension of the elbow
  • Feel for the contraction of anconeus while the patient is keeping the tension

Strength test: Triceps og anconeus

  • Patient position: Supine
  • Ask the patient to hold the arm in a 90° flexion of the shoulder-joint
  • Give resistance towards the forearm in direction of flexion
  • The patient gives force towards extension and maintains the position
