ANATOMY:

Position

  • Anterior part is superficial
  • Posterior part is deep

Origin

  • External surface of processus alveolaris mandibula
  • External surface of processus alveolaris maxillae
  • Raphe pterygomandibularis

Insertion

  • Lateral to the angle of the mouth

Main function

  • Pulls the angle of the mouth back
  • Compresses the cheek against the teeth (important during chewing)

Nerve innervation

  • Facial nerve, CN VII (buccal branches)

Arterial supply

  • Artery maxillaris
  • Artery facialis
