ANATOMY:

Zygomaticus major

Position:

  • Superficial

Origin:

  • Zygomatic bone in front of temporal process

Insertion:

  • Modilous lateral to the angle of the mouth
  • Blends with other adjacents muscles of the mouth

Main function:

  • Elevates the angle of the mouth

Secondary function:

  • Draws angle of the mouth laterally

Nerve innervation:

  • Segmental:
    • Facial nerve, CN VII
  • Peripheral:
    • Buccal branches

Arterial supply:

  • Facial artery

Zygomaticus minor

Position:

  • Superficial

Origin:

  • Zygomatic bone

Insertion:

  • Orbicularis oris of upper lip

Main function:

  • Elevates the upper lip

Secondary function:

  • Everts the upper lip

Nerve innervation:

  • Segmental:
    • Facial nerve
  • Peripheral:
    • Buccal branches

Arterial supply:

  • Facial artery
