HIGH ARCH OF FOOT
Look at the medial side of the foot and evaluate if there is an abnormal arch to the foot.
If the arch is elevated, consider the following patterns:
Dorsiflexors of the ankle
Knee flexors
Hip flexors
- Iliopsoas (Psoas Major, Iliacus)
- Sartorius
- Tensor Fascia Latae
- Rectus Femoris
- Pectineus
- Adductor Longus
- Gracilis
- Adductor Brevis
- Gluteus Medius (anterior fibers)
- Gluteus Minimus (anterior fibers)
Abduction of hip
LOW ARCH OF FOOT
Look at the medial side of the foot and evaluate if there is an abnormal arch to the foot.
If the arch is lower than normal, consider the following patterns:
Adduction of hip
Medial rotation of hip
- Tensor Fascia Latae
- Semitendinosus
- Semimembranosus
- Piriformis
- Gluteus Medius (anterior fibers)
- Gluteus Minimus (anterior fibers)
OUT-TOEING OF FEET
Compare the medial malleoli of both feet to each other, if one level is higher than the other the following patterns may be involved:
Lateral rotation hip
Lateral rotation knee
Flexion ankle
- Gastrocnemius
- Soleus
- Peroneus Longus
- Peroneus Brevis
- Tibialis Posterior
- Flexor Digitorum Longus
- Flexor Hallucis Longus
- Plantaris
